A Road Safety Awareness Campaign was conducted to educate students and staff on safe road practices and traffic rules. The session was led by Mr. Pious Guit, AMVI, SRTO, Chittur, who shared valuable insights on road safety, accident prevention, and responsible road usage.

The speaker highlighted the importance of following traffic rules to ensure personal and public safety.

During the session, participants were informed that around 4000 people die every year due to road accidents, with the 15–50 age group being the most affected. The minimum legal age for driving is 18 years, and strict adherence to this rule is essential. The distinction between yellow-board vehicles, which are used for commercial transport, and white-board vehicles, meant for private use, was explained.

The major causes of road accidents discussed included overspeeding, lack of vehicle control among youngsters, distractions such as mobile phone usage while driving, drunk driving, and the increasing number of vehicles on roads. It was emphasized that merely increasing road width leads to more vehicles, and hence, improving public transport is a better solution.

The session explained the relationship between speed and pedestrian fatality, stating that the probability of pedestrian death increases by 40% with higher impact speed. Concepts such as reaction time, reaction distance, braking distance, and rapid stopping distance were clearly described. It was also highlighted that in school zones, the speed limit should not exceed 25 km/h.

Important vehicle safety features like airbags, seat belts, and helmets were discussed, along with their advantages in reducing injury and saving lives. The speaker explained how the field of vision decreases at higher speeds, increasing accident risk.

Participants were educated about traffic signals, including mandatory signs, cautionary signs, and information signs, as well as road markings and their significance.

The session concluded with a strong message to follow road rules, wear safety gear, and drive responsibly to ensure a safe journey for everyone. The programme was informative and impactful, creating awareness about the importance of road safety in daily life.
